shallow today we're going to take a
little linguistic tour and find out who
are the Gentiles there's a lot of
misunderstandings when we start talking
about things that are happening in
Hebrew roots or messianic babe but if
you want to call it we're very grateful
to pastor henry right who is determined
that the root for misunderstanding is
that somebody just didn't understand
when people who are ethnically jewish
receive Yahshua as their Messiah they
become Messianic Jews and in days past
there were not too many messianic
fellowship sore congregations for them
to go to and so many of them went into
church but they were still called
Messianic Jews as those congregations
developed and grew people who were not
ethnic Lee Jewish wanted to join with
them for whatever reason and they didn't
know what to call themselves maybe they
begin to be called messianic Gentiles
but people take offense at this word
Gentile and we're going to see why and
how that developed the problem stems
really from two directions and the
offensive word here in Hebrew is going
it's actually not offensive in Hebrew
but we will find out that it seems to
become offensive in yet so these are the
two directions the English translations
of this word gleam and then we also have
the problem of the Yiddish usage of the
word remember Hebrew and Yiddish are
different world languages and we'll
discuss that later
so in the King James translation at the
Old Testament this word [ __ ] is
translated as gentle 30 times and he
then as 143 times but there are no
pagans in the New King James we managed
to get rid of the heathens but now there
are pagans in the Jewish publication
society the heathen word is used very
very few times there's no mention of
Gentiles no mention of pagan and when
you go to Young's literal translation
none of these words are mentioned at all
so what is the meaning of going
according to the Strong's you see that
the largest number of times it is
translated as nation and then we have
this idea of heathen or Gentile I
understand that a person who is a
believer does not want to be considered
a person who doesn't believe in God
certainly not as a heathen but what is
the idea behind Gentile before we get to
that I want to be comparing this word
[ __ ] to another word which is on this is
also translated as people or nation and
you see the translations forearm never
have any negative connotation about them
they're just the people through the word
arm has the same root as the word team
which is a word that means with Genesis
1823 an Abraham drew near and said wilt
thou also destroy the righteous with the
wicked it's very difficult to see this
word em in the text it's very frequently
combined with a personal pronoun a
possessive pronoun with me with you etc
but you might recognize the word at the
bottom there Iman ooo l M with a new us
ow God God with us as the prophecy in
Isaiah talks about mushiya Emmanuelle
Genesis 11 6 and you always said behold
the people the arm the people group is
one and they have all one language and
this they begin to do and now nothing
will be restrained from them which they
have imagined to do you can see that
these people are building a tower of
babel they're not a particularly holy
people or any kind of set apart people
but they're not called heathens either
they're just an arm there are people
group Genesis 19 for but before they lay
down the men of the city even the men of
Sodom compass the house round both old
and young all the people um from every
quarter again not a holy people not a
righteous people just the people group
dennis is 23 12 and abraham bowed
himself before the people the arm of the
land this is talking about the Hittites
Genesis 3422 only here in will the men
consent unto us for to dwell with us to
be one people one um if every male among
us be circumcised as they're circumcised
talking about the people of Shem they're
not special people for God or anything
they're just a people group this is the
word on now the word boy has the same
room as the word givi yah which means
body genesis 4718 when that year was
ended they came unto him the second year
and said unto Him we will not hide it
from my lord I'll that our money is
spent my lord also has our herds of
cattle there is not ought left in the
sight of my lord but our bodies and our
lands for the idea and we see in
libertagia that the people are a one
body we're taught that we are one body
this is referring to physical bodies
Ezekiel 111 thus were their faces and
their wings were stretched upward two
wings of everyone were joined to one
another and to cover their bodies there
gold being now we're going to go to the
first use of this word in Tana which is
Genesis ten five and we see that even
though in the Hebrew both words are the
same in the King James we see two
different translations by these were the
Isles at the Gentiles this is on the
upper line you can see in the gold hot
boy units it's the word [ __ ] it's
translated as Gentiles the Isles of the
Gentiles divided in their lands everyone
after his tongue after his language up
to their families in their nations and
the same go appears there so I do not
know why two different words were chosen
but we're going to go back and look at
the history of when when this change
took place this is from the targum uncle
oh such as a first century Aramaic
document and I have highlighted his
translation which is word-for-word
almost the same you can see that he has
used the word on the cognate for the
word on in both places instead of boy
which leads us to believe that they're
very similar concepts they're both about
a people group
this is the septuagint Wichita was
translated from the Hebrew in about the
third century BCE and I've highlighted
the Greek words which were unison in
both case those words are ethnos and
those as a cognate that you know in
English ethnic it just means relating to
a people group however by the time it
was translated into english by Brenton
in 1851 he also followed the King James
pattern and translated in this two
different words one is Gentiles and the
other ones nations remember they're both
the same word in Hebrew boy
when Jerome translated the Bible into
Latin in the fourth century he also used
two different words and you can see the
first one is gentium and I really don't
pronounce Latin so I'm not going to say
that's a correct pronunciation but we
are going to investigate this work the
bottom word obviously is related to
nations and this is the idea behind [ __ ]
but suddenly he chose to use a different
word and it is the origin of the word
Gentile so we are going to look at it in
the 1300s when wickliffe translated into
English he just went right for the
heathen there and the second tent one
who uses nations I'm not sure why this
developed but it does go far back it
goes back at least to the fourth century
this idea that the nation's people in
the nations are heathens are pagans now
the word he then was first used by alpha
loss in the first translation of the
Bible into a Germanic language according
to Adam ologist seeeeee people who study
the origins of words the word heathen
and other basic words for exclusively
Christian ideas such as the word church
it probably came first from gothic and
spread to other Germanic languages so in
case you have forgotten who olfi loss
was and I sure never heard of him until
I started this PowerPoint he was a
bishop and a missionary in a Bible
translator he was either a goth or hop
gothic and half Greek and he had spent
time in the Roman Empire at the peak of
the Arian controversy and i'll let you
research that yourself it's a
controversy from the early church about
the nature of hui shuo was wealthy loss
was ordained as a as a bishop by
Eusebius of nick Amida and returned to
his people to work as a missionary in
the year 348 in order to escape
religious persecution he obtained
permission to migrate with his converts
to an area which is now in modern
bulgaria while he was there he
translated the bible from greek into the
gothic language he actually devised the
gothic alphabet and there are fragments
of this translation which has survived
although he was a raised as a goth he
later became proficient in Greek and
Latin as quite a feat for somebody in
the fourth century if we think about
that he converted many Goths to some
kind of form of Christianity and that
made them kind of different from their
neighbor Goths just to look at this idea
that the German terms came through in
that way we see in Luther's translation
that he also this is a still the Genesis
10 5 then he translated that then they
were the aisle islands miles of the
heathen but when he got down to the
bottom he translated it as people people
group so as we start to analyze what
exactly the word Gentile means in
English just have a brief look here
again at the Jerome vulgate and the root
of that word is jen's and it comes from
a clan member of a family connected by
common descent the use of the same
Gentile name the same last name the
basic meaning is a tribe of people or a
nation so if you are a Gentile I'm from
the meaning of the word it just means
that you are in the nation's and that is
also we will see what the word boy means
here's a definition from this route it's
the same war that we use the same route
that comes to mean gentry or genteel or
gentleman by if you are a man not a lady
but if you were a man and I said you're
a messianic gentleman you wouldn't have
any problem with that but if you are
messianic gen
somehow people get offended we think
that they're being called pagans or
heathens or godless people so around the
14th century the word Gentile came to
mean of or pertaining to all of the
nations which were not Jewish okay and
they began to separate that idea out I
almost think we're going to look at the
at the Yiddish in a minute but it seems
to be the same timeframe but in the
1500s it came to mean that maybe you
were a Hindu as opposed to being a
Muslim then you were just called a
Gentile because you weren't a people of
the book and in the 1800's the Mormons
started to use this word for people that
were not Mormons I just have a feeling
of kind of a xenophobia rising up among
certain groups of people look at some
verses which use the both the word [ __ ]
and the word on in them Deuteronomy 427
and you always shall scatter you among
the nations among the uname among the
people groups and you should be left for
you a number among the all of a sudden
their heathen they're the [ __ ] they're
the same nations or the same people
groups whether that Yahweh should lead
you second Kings 1711 and there they
burn incense in all the high places and
did as the nation's then the nations are
without God and they will do things that
are godless or serving other gods or
have you want to look at they will do
that but the word [ __ ] does not mean
heathen people in the nation's do things
which are heathen but it doesn't mean
that all the people that live in the
nations are without god there's no idea
behind that in the Hebrew
as did the [ __ ] whom yaoi carried away
before them and rot wicked things to
provoke Yahweh to anger here is another
use of the word [ __ ] very interesting
Exodus 19 sixth and he shall be unto me
a kingdom of priests and a holy nation a
[ __ ] Kadosh this is clearly speaking the
children of Israel these are the words
which thou shalt speak unto the children
of Israel by comparison in first Peter
29 but ye are a chosen generation a
royal priesthood again a holy nation he
uses the word ethnos which is the word
that was used in the Septuagint to
translate the word boy from Hebrew to
Greek a peculiar people that you should
show forth the praises of him who has
called you out of the darkness into his
marvelous light second chronicles 30 39
so menasha made judah and the
inhabitants of jerusalem to air and to
do worse than the [ __ ] just the nations
that are around them yes they are acting
like godless people but it's just about
the nations who surround Israel whom
Yahweh had destroyed before the children
of Israel second Samuel 7 23 and what
one nation which boy which people group
in the earth is like thy people on
another people group what other what
people group is like the people group
that belongs to Yahweh going on they're
almost interchangeable even like Israel
whom God went to redeem for people to
himself and to make him a name to do for
you great things and terrible for thy
land before they people which is our
Dimas to thee from Egypt from the
nations and their gods the promises to
Abraham Genesis 17 5 neither shall thy
name anymore be called Abram of ROM but
they named shall be over ahum for a
father of many nations going there's
people all over the world they all come
from a
ham and they are nations they're just
not necessarily pagans or godless people
they're just the nation's Genesis 18 18
seeing that Abraham shall have become a
great and mighty nation a boy and all
the nations going of the earth shall be
blessed in him the Jewish people
consider abraham to be the first Jew
it's a little out of order but there are
a guy with all the other game Genesis 35
11 God said unto him I am God Almighty
be fruitful and multiply a nation boy a
company of Nations Williams shall be of
thee and Kings shall come out of thy
loins Exodus 33 13 now therefore i pray
thee if I have found grace in thy sight
show me now thy way that I may know thee
that I might find grace in thy sight and
consider that this nation boy is thy
people um we have seen I'm used to mean
pagan people godless people we have seen
go I used to be paying in regardless
people they're just people groups Isaiah
11 12 and he shall set up an innocent
for the nations for all the [ __ ] and
shall assemble the outcasts of Israel
and gather the dispersed of Judah for
the four corners of the earth a little
bit interesting is people from Israel
are outcasts people from Judah are just
dispersed your identity is not heathen
or pagan if you are a Gentile it just
means that you are from the nation's if
you are born Italian you'll die Italian
you are born Jewish you will die Jewish
if you are born African you will die
African you are just of some people
group every person is born into a people
group
rob a my ear in the second century said
that if a non-jew was well versed and
Torah is equal in rank to the high
priest multiculturalism is a very
important tenet of Jewish life
considering that Jews have lived all
over the earth they appreciate the fact
that other people can be different that
they are different and that they Jewish
people can be accepted among a
multicultural population Rashi a great
rabbi of the 11th century said that the
Gentiles of the present age are not
heathens Gentile does not mean he then
it just means you're of the nation's now
we're going to investigate the Yiddish
side of the problem Yiddish is the
historical language of Ashkenazi Jews
European Jews it originated during the
ninth century in Central Europe
providing the pre-existent language of
the nascent Ashkenazi community with an
extensive Germanic based vocabulary
Yiddish is written with a fully
vocalized alphabet based on the Hebrew
script the earliest surviving references
date from the 12th century common usage
a language is called mama lotion which
literally means mother tongue
distinguishing it from Hebrew which is
termed Lashon hakodesh or if you are
maybe wandering around in Brooklyn
lotion kodesh which means the holy
tongue the term Yiddish did not become
the most frequently use designation in
the literature until the 18th century in
the late nineteenth and more commonly
into the 20th century the language is
called Jewish especially in non Jewish
context but Yiddish is currently the
designation the common designation there
is nothing inherently insulting about
the word [ __ ] as we have been trying to
emphasize in this presentation in fact
the Torah occasionally refers to the
Jewish people using the term [ __ ] as we
saw in Exodus 19 6 god says that the
children of Israel will be a king
I'm of priests and a holy nation that is
go at ocean however Jews have had so
many bad experiences with anti-semitic
non-jews over the centuries the term [ __ ]
has taken on some negative connotations
but in general it is no more insulting
than the word Gentile well some people
are insulted by the word Gentile so
there you go people who are living
persecuted in a country tend to self
isolate and they begin to cheer that's
that's xenophobia thing again make the
other people something other so the word
[ __ ] has a very specific implication in
Yiddish it can be something just as
simple as people who do things
differently than other people people who
think a certain way and not necessarily
an anti-semitic way but just a different
way of thinking where we have it two
terms a new dish a cup cup coming from
the German word cup cup meaning head a
Yiddish a cup if somebody is how they
think about things how they can get
around the world how they can do
business a certain way we're always when
we meet the kind of play Jewish
geography and see well who do you know
here and who do you know there maybe
we're related somebody will know
somebody is very common a [ __ ] asia cup
is maybe somebody that's not so clever
at business they just think about things
in a different way the it's kind of a
different world of you on the other hand
there are certain anti-semitic things
that have come through history and so
when we talk about [ __ ] sometimes we
have a very negative view I'm not going
to go into a long history of
anti-semitism I'm sure you're very well
familiar of it I'm just going to show
you this little chart and the left side
shows you the date and the right side
shows you the
entry from which the Jews have been
exiled so you can imagine this has some
effect on the psyche of the people
now you might not be the very first
people to have been insulted very first
believers in Yeshua to have been
insulted by the idea that you were a [ __ ]
and so we find that Christian sensors of
the Talmud in the 16th century developed
an acronym to replace the word [ __ ]
wherever it appeared because they didn't
want to be considered heathen either so
this acronym is a home and it stands for
Ovid co phim umas a looked worshippers
of the stars and constellation so in
their own minds they did not want that
the Jews would consider all going to be
heathen or pagan they wanted to be set
apart from from that concept of course
we can never affect how other people
think of us and either as a people group
or as a singular person people are bound
to think what they want to think so part
of the reason that I wanted to talk
about this is something that people
whether you're a Hebrew messianic or a
Hebrew Christian or Hebrew roots or
whatever name you consider yourself
people are talking about this like the
movement and I absolutely agree that
it's a movement of God because you can
see how it is springing up all over the
earth with no man teaching anybody or no
man convincing anybody that they should
come and do this in fact most people
that come into it whether from a Jewish
side or a Christians I'd lose have
something to lose we lose our
relationships with our friends our
family people that we used to fellowship
with when you get into this they begin
to think you're crazier whatever the
problem turns out to be and so because
this is kind of happening independently
all over the world we have to know that
the father is doing something in the
earth and there is a move of the Spirit
the problem is when we think of it
as a movement we start to try and move
things as human beings and I think
that's not the most effective way
obviously we have to live by the spirit
and when we feel this bird of God moving
then we move some people think that
maybe it's a denomination I feel pretty
sure that there's not too many Jewish
governing bodies that want to consider
you a Jewish denomination and there's
not too many Christian governing bodies
I want to consider you a denomination
either the nomination means that that
there's a name that's what the word
comes from and clearly we don't have a
name so we can't be a denomination some
people think that we could be a nation
but i would like to remind you that when
the children of israel went down to
Egypt in Exodus 11 they went down as a
family after much trial and tribulation
they came out as a nation and I believe
that as a pattern for us so I think we
have to think of ourselves more as a
family the Hebrew word for family is
mishpacha Genesis 819 every beast every
creeping thing and every fowl and
whatsoever creepeth upon the earth after
their kinds after their families went
forth out of the ark Genesis 12 3 and I
will bless them that bless thee and
curse them that curse thee and indy all
the families of the earth shall be
blessed the word family comes from the
word for handmade in Shipka genesis 16 1
now Sarai Abrams wife bear him no
children and she had a handmade and
Egyptian whose name was Hagar Ruth 23
then she said let me find favor in thy
sight my lord for thou hast comforted me
and for that thou has spoken friendly
unto thine hand Maiden though I be not
like one of thine hand maidens I think
it's interesting in both these cases
that the handmade
not from the tribe they're not from the
family and yet the family is built by
them Ephesians 3 14 for this cause i
found my knees unto the father of our
Lord issue in the Messiah of whom the
whole family in heaven and earth is
named if we're going to take his name
then we are going to be part of his
family one house one set of rules as in
any family on earth so we can think of
ourselves as in a giant of bulgarian de
chile and a Dane an estonian affinia
German Haitian and Indiana Japanese a
cashmere Lithuanian a Maltese a Nigerian
oak and now in a Portuguese a Qatari a
Rwandan singaporean died Ugandan
Venezuelan well easy and Yap Zambezi and
no I couldn't find a country that
started with X or a Jew or an American
but that is the nation in which we're
born issue a said we have to be born
again or we have to be born above and
once we are reborn into his family the
word Hebrew means to cross over and so
if we are willing to leave our nation
and join the family then we cross over
into the family of Yahweh so maybe we
can just call ourselves tour observant
believers and not worry about the
traditions and nations that we came out
of just learn to be a family of Torah
observant believers Peter first Peter to
11 and 12 dearly beloved I beseech you
as strangers and pilgrims abstain from
fleshly lusts which war against your
soul having your conversation honest
among the people that you live around in
your nation that whereas they speak
against you as evildoers they may by
your good works which they shall behold
glorify God in the day of visitation
you're a stranger
in a pilgrim in this world your nation
is not your home it's not your identity
Hebrews 13 14 through 17 for he here
have we no continuing City but we seek
one to come by him therefore let us
offer the sacrifice of praise to God
continually that is the fruit of our
lips giving thanks to his name but to do
good and to communicate forget not for
with such sacrifices God is well pleased
obey them that have rule over you and
you submit yourselves where they watch
for your souls as they must give account
that they may do it with joy and not
with grief for that is unprofitable for
you this world is not your home but you
can get ready for the world to come by
moving into the family of the Father
well we do have some kind of irritating
problems between us I look forward to
the day of Isaiah 11 13 the envy of a
frien will depart the adversaries of
Judah shall be cut off after I am shall
not NBD Judah and Judah shall not vex at
fri am everybody is born with unique
purpose everybody is born into a nation
into a biological family for to be
molded and shaped in the way that the
father has designed for you he has a
plan for your life you should be who you
are when you cross over into the family
you're going to bring certain gifts with
you don't try and be somebody that
you're not just bring the thing that you
have to the family and obey the rules of
the family until that day comes around
Cosima teen I am L Hashem I am keep your
