the

Product Owner Roles and Responsibilities | Who is a Product Owner? | Edureka

[Music]

basic intent of a product owner is to

represent the customer to the

development team a key responsibility of

this job profile is to manage and give

visibility to the product backlog or the

prioritized list of requirements for

future product development in fact the

product owner is the only one that has

the authority to change the priority of

requirements in the product backlog hi

all I'm a partner from Ed Eureka and

this session we are going to talk all

about the roles and responsibilities of

a product owner but before we begin

let's look at the agenda for today so we

are going to start out with a little

introduction to who is a product owner

and what do they do then I'm going to

clear a very common doubt which people

have there is a difference between the

product owner and the product manager

then we are going to move on to the

roles and responsibilities of the

product owner followed by how to become

a good product owner in which section I

am going to discuss the skills that you

require the mindset that you need to

become a good product owner and finally

we're going to close this session with a

few common challenges or obstacles faced

by a product owner with that I come to

the end of my agenda also kindly take up

this time to go ahead and hit the

subscribe button to never miss an update

from the edge.a Rekha YouTube channel so

without much ado let's get started

so before understanding who is a product

owner let's try to step into the shoes

of the PIO and see what do they do so

what you're seeing right now is a

picture of what we call a product

backlog a product backlog is basically a

list of requirements that are set

according to the order of prioritization

so the requirement of most priority is

gonna stay on top and the one with the

least priority goes to the bottom now

the product owner is the sole person

responsible

for managing the product backlog the

product backlog management includes the

following things firstly you have to

clearly Express the product backlog

items in the product backlog then you

have to order these items in the product

backlog to best achieve the goals and

missions of that particular sprint next

you have to optimize the value of work

by the development team and also ensure

that the product backlog is visible

transparent and clear to all also make

sure that this product backlog shows

what the scrum team will be working on

next finally you should be ensuring the

development team understands the items

in the product backlog to the level that

is needed now somebody that does all of

this is known as a product owner so as

described in the scrum guide a scrum

product owner is responsible for

maximizing the value of the product

resulting from the work of the

development team now how this is done

may vary widely across organizations

scrum teams and individuals now the

product owner may do all the work that I

just mentioned or have the development

team do it however the product owner

solely remains accountable for all the

work that I had just mentioned one

peculiar aspect of a product owners

responsibilities they must be available

invariably to the development team to

answer any queries regarding the

customers view of how they're

implementing a product feature the

product owner is one person not a

committee but they may represent the

desires of a committee in the product

backlog but those wanting to change a

product backlog items priority must

always address the product owner first

so for the product owner to succeed the

entire organization must respect his or

her decisions and the product owner must

make sure that their decisions are

visible in the content and ordering of

the product backlog no one can force the

development team to work from a

difference

requirements now that we know what a

product owner is let me bust a very

common myth regarding the product owner

a lot of people might get confused

between the job roles of a product owner

or a Pio and a product manager so let us

understand how the both of these are

different the key difference between a

product manager and a product owner

revolves around their mindset when

approaching a problem to be solved a

product owner basically focuses on the

internal issues requires implementation

inside of the company and the

development process whereas the product

manager has an external focus a product

manager will mostly talk about long-term

strategy and markets and customers needs

if I had to explain it to you in simpler

terms and explain it to you like this so

given a task or funding the product

manager will respond if you give me this

resource I will deliver you this

business result whereas it is different

for the product owner the product owner

on the other hand will say if you are

going to spend this money I am going to

make sure you get the most value from

your development investment and that is

how both of their approaches are

different both being equally important

to an enterprise but in a lot of smaller

enterprises you will see that the

product owner is the product manager and

vice a versa so with that let's move on

to the product owner roles and

responsibilities now obviously as most

people know product owners are at the

eye of every development cycle but what

do they actually do what do their

responsibilities include no product

owners role can vary depending on what

kind of environment it is they typically

have several essential roles and

responsibilities encasing all the things

from business strategy to product design

so first of all you have defining a

vision in an agile environment the

product owner is the person on the

product development team who defies

goals and creates

for development projects using their

high-level perspective now these product

owners are responsible for communicating

with the stakeholders across the board

including customers business managers

and the development team to make sure

that the goals are clear and the vision

is aligned with the business objectives

having a product owner with a higher

perspective ensures that the team

maintains a cohesive vision

despite the flexible and often

fast-paced nature of the agile product

development everyone needs to be on the

same page in order for a project to work

efficiently a product owner can help the

team maintain the vision by creating a

product roadmap now the product roadmap

is a high-level strategic visual summary

that outlines the vision and direction

for a product offering over time now it

is both a strategic guide for

stakeholders to reference as well as a

plan for execution for the development

team next is something that you all must

be pretty familiar with it is managing

the product backlog one of the most

important responsibilities for a product

owner is managing the product backlog

now this serves as a development teams

to-do list the product owners

responsibility is to create a list of

backlog items and prioritize them based

on the overall strategy and business in

additionally the product owner will need

to map out the project dependencies to

inform the necessary sequence of

development the product backlog isn't a

static to-do list though it is a live

document that should be continually

updated dynamically based on the

evolving project needs throughout the

development processes now because of the

product backlog which changes frequently

the product owner must make the list

accessible and available to all the

stakeholders particularly developers to

ensure optimize performance and project

outcomes

next you have prioritizing requirements

or needs another key role of the product

owner is to prioritize needs in the

backlog now in other words they must

juggle the triangle of scope budget and

tie

when priorities according to the needs

and objectives of stakeholders for

example if the project under development

needs to launch within six months that

constraints the scope of the project as

the project evolves the product owner

will have to gauge which areas have

flexibility and which don't to determine

how and when each iteration and product

element shall be developed

next is over viewing the development

stages with the vision strategy and

product priorities set the product owner

should spend a significant amount of

time overseeing the actual development

of the product they are a key player

throughout each event including the

planning refinement review and sprint

during the planning stages the age a

product owner works with the

stakeholders to identify and organize

the steps required for the next

iteration

they will then meet their team to refine

the process identify areas for

improvement and support the Sprint now

this is important

the successful product owner will be an

expert at understanding and anticipating

the client's needs to more effective

levels to manage the development process

they're deep market knowledge and

communication skills allow them to

anticipate problems or needs and address

them next is acting as a primary license

now the product owner is also the

primary communicator and link between

stakeholders and teams as such they have

to be expert communicators and

storytellers making sure there is a

buy-in from stakeholders on all major

decisions and strategy and clear

instructions and deliverables for the

development team next is evaluating

product progress at each iteration the

product owner is accountable for each

stage of the development process and the

final product they take the primary role

in inspecting and evaluating product

progress through each iteration the

product owner makes the judgment call on

the performance deciding if the team

needs to go back to the drawing board or

they can move ahead on to the next steps

finally you have terminating the Sprint

now this does not happen very often but

if it has to it's the product owners

decision to terminate a sprint just in

case

they run out of resources or there is a

high level of ambiguity in the product

backlog now getting into a product

owners job role not only requires a

thorough understanding of the product

but it will also take into account the

analytical and strategic skills a person

who wants to deep dive and become a good

product owner needs to understand the

market and the stakeholders alike and he

or she should also be able to create a

vision and know when to juggle with the

items in the product backlog so that the

bucket is always prioritized so in the

next section I am going to tell you how

to be a good product owner the

competence of a product owner definitely

has a huge hand if the project is a

success to be a good product owner you

need to have six essential skills a

flawless representative a product owner

has to oversee the whole project but

it's practically impossible for somebody

to be an expert in each and every aspect

of the project therefore a product owner

should form an informal and discrete

group with a scrum master and the

different subject matter experts these

experts with the help of their expertise

can help the product owner become a

flawless representative immensely

knowledgeable about the product well if

you are the owner of a specific product

then you should know about it inside out

additionally you shouldn't only think

about the product but also what is the

scope of the same in the market in doing

so you can get a clear idea regarding

what sort of feedback and popularity

your product will get an excellent

storyteller if you want to be an amazing

product owner then you certainly need to

know the strategy of simply slicing the

user story into the product backlog and

conveying it to the developers likewise

a standout amongst your most exclusive

responsibilities ought to be to figure

out what can transform your narrative

into a Prada

feature that will in turn have the

capacity to entertain the clients

extremely communicative now you need to

be absolutely amazing about speaking and

understanding both the customers and the

developers dialects thus neither of the

developers nor the clients will feel

irritated to converse with you a

brilliant problem solver now you should

have the capacity and strength to engage

when things get troublesome you need to

collaborate to limit the negative

viewpoints as far as possible and also

you must be an excellent arbiter and

finally the product owner must be an

agile individual now you should be able

to examine comprehend and acknowledge

the facts that are pointed out by the

members of your group consequently you

will come up with just the best elements

regarding your product you should have

the capacity to control your outrage if

any previous unknown impediments or

constraints come up suddenly so these

are the six skills which will make you a

great product owner these skills can be

developed slowly without any formal

training but for dealing with critical

processes like software development you

need to have a deep and systematic

understanding of many factors so moving

on let's look at what are the challenges

faced by a product owner as everyone in

the agile teams the product owner also

has a few challenges to tackle with

let's talk about a few of them first of

all is the absence of a product roadmap

now in the absence of a product roadmap

you need to be the sole guide of the

development team regarding how to

proceed with the product next the

high-level acceptance criteria as in the

product being approved by the higher

authorities in any enterprise that is

spending too much time dealing with the

product support instead of grooming the

backlog and finally changing priority

when the Sprint is in progress product

owners can escape these usual snares by

working around the product roadmap

centering on high value backlog items

defining crisp acceptance criteria

concentrating on grooming quality

from items and finally avoiding the stir

bang Sprint's now the role of a product

owner is indispensable for scrum teams

this role can be compared to a deeply

rooted tree which has a firm foundation

on the product side and provides vision

and approach and planned execution on

the outer side the product owners carry

the ownership of the product in terms of

quality and delivering as per

expectations set with the stakeholder

the product owner needs to have an

all-inclusive view of the product along

with all other factors that make the

product successful which involves

understanding business go to market

organizational readiness and product

capabilities all of these should be

collectively managed and coordinated and

aligned to drive the product to success

and by extension make a successful

product owner with that said I'd like to
